2015 Fall Bear Hunt
The 2015 Ontario black bear hunting season was our most successful year to date! We hosted 24 hunters and successfully harvested 24 black bears — a perfect 100% success rate.
After months of preparation, scouting, and managing our bait stations, everything came together for an incredible season of guided black bear hunting in Northern Ontario.
Week One: A Record-Breaking Start to the Bear Hunt
We hosted 21 hunters during the first week, and opening day started better than we could have imagined. Ten black bears were harvested on the very first day, while several other hunters chose to pass on opportunities and wait for a larger bear.
One hunter only had to sit for about 20 minutes before an opportunity presented itself. While dropping him off at his stand, we noticed that a large black bear had already visited the site, leaving claw marks in his climber and even cookie crumbs behind from the bait. Shortly after, he successfully harvested his 250-pound bear.
Another hunter experienced incredible bear activity, with six different bears visiting his bait site between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. He eventually made the perfect shot on a 230-pound black bear.
Bears continued to be harvested throughout the entire day, once again proving the importance of hunting all daylight hours during an Ontario black bear hunt. Several hunters experienced multiple bear encounters, including one hunter who had opportunities at three different bears but was unable to complete the harvest.
With so much action early in the week, expectations were high. By the fourth day, all but two hunters had successfully harvested their bears. By the fifth day, those final two hunters completed their hunts, making it a perfect opening week.
Many hunters had multiple encounters with different bears throughout the week, creating unforgettable memories and showcasing the incredible bear population in our hunting area.
Week Two: Finishing a Perfect Season
The second week of our guided Ontario black bear hunt started just as strong. Two hunters harvested their bears on the very first day.
One hunter waited only 45 minutes before successfully harvesting his first black bear — a 230-pound bear. The second hunter harvested a 210-pound bear, giving us another great start to the week.
The second day brought heavy rain, making conditions difficult. After sitting through the weather all day, one hunter was rewarded on the third day of his hunt.
Back at camp, everyone was anxiously waiting for the call. We were joking around and placing bets on when it would happen. At 6:00 p.m., the action finally began.
The bear stepped out and, after about 30 minutes, presented the perfect broadside shot. The arrow was released, and everyone knew it was a great hit. The bear only traveled about 40 yards before letting out the famous death moan.
That was when the call came in.
It was his first black bear, and the excitement in his voice was something we will never forget. At that moment, we knew we had completed a perfect season.
All the preparation, long days, and countless hours spent managing bait sites had paid off.
An Incredible Black Bear Population in Northern Ontario
Even after the season ended and I began shutting things down, removing trail cameras, and making final rounds through the hunting areas, the bear activity continued. The woods were still full of black bears.
Even into October, while checking our deer bait sites, we were still seeing bears regularly.
In 2012, we received a survey from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry regarding estimated bear densities in our hunting area. The results showed approximately 40–60 bears per 60 square miles, and the 2015 season truly confirmed the incredible black bear numbers in our region.
