ONTARIO RESIDENT MOOSE HUNTS (WMU 55A)

In 2024, we were excited to acquire the only outfitter bull moose tag in Wildlife Management Unit 55A. Beginning in 2025, Wild North Outfitters started offering semi-guided Ontario resident moose hunts to a limited number of resident hunters during the October firearm season.

Our year-round work in the bush gives us a unique advantage when preparing for moose season. While maintaining bear bait sites, scouting for deer, and spending countless hours on the trail system, we're constantly observing mo

ose activity and identifying productive areas for the fall hunt.

Face-to-face encounters with moose on ATV trails and logging roads are a regular occurrence throughout the year. With Algonquin Provincial Park bordering much of WMU 55A, the area supports a healthy and stable moose population. Ongoing forest management and logging operations continually create new growth, providing an excellent food source that attracts and holds moose throughout the region. In the spring, we also maintain mineral licks throughout the area to provide moose with the essential minerals they need after a long winter and to support healthy antler growth and overall condition.

To provide every hunter with a quality experience, we intentionally limit the number of hunts we offer each season. Our goal is to give Ontario residents the opportunity to enjoy a safe, ethical, and memorable moose hunt while exploring one of Ontario's premier moose hunting areas.

Ontario Moose Hunting Rules & Regulations

At Wild North Outfitters, we are committed to providing safe, ethical, and enjoyable semi-guided Ontario Moose hunt. To ensure the best possible experience for every hunter while complying with Ontario hunting regulations, all guests are expected to follow the guidelines below.

Hunting Rules

By booking a hunt with Wild North Outfitters, you agree to the following:

  • Hunters are required by Ontario law to wear hunter orange (hat and vest) while hunting.

  • All firearms must be unloaded and properly cased while traveling before dawn and after dusk, in accordance with Ontario hunting regulations.

  • Hunters are expected to practice ethical hunting and only take shots they are confident they can make.

  • Please remain in your tree stand or blind until your guide arrives unless instructed otherwise.

  • Follow your guide's instructions at all times to ensure a safe, ethical, and successful hunt.

  • Respect fellow hunters, wildlife, and the natural environment throughout your stay.

Wounded Moose Policy

Ethical hunting is one of the core values at Wild North Outfitters. Every reasonable effort will be made to recover harvested game quickly, responsibly, and humanely.

Please understand that a wounded deer is considered your deer, whether it is recovered or not. Our experienced guides will do everything reasonably possible to track and recover a wounded animal. However, because of dense forests, rugged terrain, weather conditions, and the natural behavior of wounded deer, a successful recovery cannot always be guaranteed.

For this reason, we strongly encourage every hunter to wait for a high-percentage shot opportunity. Patience and proper shot placement provide the greatest chance of a quick, ethical harvest and a successful recovery.

Our goal is to ensure every hunt is conducted with respect for the animal, the resource, and the traditions of ethical hunting.

Recommended Firearms for Ontario Moose Hunting

One of the most common questions we receive is, "What is the best caliber for moose hunting?"

The answer is simple: bring a firearm that you shoot accurately and have complete confidence using.

At Wild North Outfitters, we recommend bringing a reliable big-game rifle chambered in a proven moose caliber. Some of the most popular choices include:

  • .30-06 Springfield

  • .300 Winchester Magnum

  • .308 Winchester

  • 7mm Remington Magnum

  • .300 WSM

  • .338 Winchester Magnum

  • .270 Winchester

  • Other comparable big-game hunting calibers

When paired with quality ammunition and proper shot placement, all of these cartridges have proven to be highly effective for Ontario moose hunting.

Shot Placement Is More Important Than Caliber

At Wild North Outfitters, our philosophy is simple:

It's not the caliber that harvests moose—it's proper shot placement.

Moose are the largest big game animal in Ontario, making shot placement and confidence in your equipment more important than ever. Whether you're hunting with a rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader, compound bow, traditional bow, or crossbow (where permitted), success comes from knowing your equipment and placing an accurate, ethical shot when the opportunity presents itself.

We encourage every hunter to bring the firearm or archery equipment they practice with regularly and feel completely comfortable using in the field. A well-placed shot from a firearm or bow you know and trust is far more effective than using a larger caliber that you aren't confident shooting.

Before heading into the woods, every hunter is welcome to use our on-site shooting range to confirm their rifle is properly sighted in before the hunt begins. Taking a few practice shots helps build confidence and provides peace of mind, ensuring your equipment is ready when that bull moose finally steps into range.

By arriving with equipment you've practiced with and trust—and by taking advantage of our shooting range—you'll give yourself the best opportunity for a clean, ethical harvest and a successful Ontario moose hunt.

Our goal is to give every hunter the confidence to make a safe, ethical, and accurate shot when the opportunity of a lifetime presents itself.

A Typical Day During Your Semi-Guided Ontario Moose Hunt

Wondering what a typical day looks like during your semi-guided Ontario resident moose hunt? While every hunt is different, this overview will give you an idea of what to expect during your stay at Wild North Outfitters.

When you arrive at camp, we'll review your hunting area, discuss recent moose activity, and explain how we recommend hunting your location. Throughout the season, we spend countless hours scouting and monitoring moose movement so you can hunt with confidence.

MORNING

5:30 a.m. – Breakfast

Start your morning with a hearty, home-cooked breakfast while discussing the day's plan with the other hunters. Before leaving camp, you'll also receive a packed lunch so you can stay in the field throughout the day.

6:30 a.m. – Head to Your Hunting Area

After breakfast, you'll travel to your assigned hunting location.

Depending on current moose activity and conditions, you'll hunt from strategically selected locations or natural calling areas. Throughout the day, you may also encounter black bears, whitetail deer, grouse, wolves, foxes, and many other species that call the Ontario wilderness home.

EVENING

After Legal Shooting Hours – Return to Camp

At the end of the hunting day, you'll return to camp for a hot meal and an evening of sharing stories, reviewing the day's sightings, and planning for tomorrow's hunt.

AFTER THE SHOT

We'll come to your location to assist with field dressing, quartering if necessary, and transporting your moose back to camp. Because of the size of these animals, recovering a moose often requires specialized equipment and teamwork. Our goal is to recover your animal safely, efficiently, and with the utmost respect.

TRACKING & RECOVERY

If a moose is hit but the blood trail is limited or shot placement is uncertain, we may decide to wait before beginning the recovery.

Although waiting is never easy, it is often the best decision. Giving a wounded moose time to expire greatly increases the chances of a successful recovery while reducing the risk of pushing it farther into heavy cover.

Every recovery situation is unique. Our priority is always to recover every moose as ethically as possible while ensuring the safety of our hunters, guides, and everyone involved.

We understand that harvesting a moose is often the hunt of a lifetime. From the moment you arrive until your moose is safely back at camp, we'll do everything we can to make your experience enjoyable, memorable, and successful.

What to Expect During Your Semi-Guided Ontario Moose Hunt

Unlike a traditional stand hunt, our semi-guided Ontario resident moose hunts are active, hands-on experiences that require hunters to be prepared to cover ground throughout the day.

Each day, I personally guide the group and spend time sitting alongside one of the hunters. As a group, we'll hunt a variety of productive moose habitat, including logging roads, recent cutovers, marshes, beaver ponds, creek crossings, and other areas where moose are actively feeding and traveling.

Rather than sitting in one location all day, we'll adapt our strategy based on current conditions and recent moose activity. We may spend the morning glassing a fresh cut before moving to a marsh or another promising location later in the day. Every hunt is different, and our approach is built around finding active moose.

Although the peak of the rut has usually passed by the October firearm season, bulls can still respond to calls. Throughout the hunt, we'll use moose calling whenever conditions are favourable in an effort to attract any bulls that are still searching for a final breeding opportunity.

Year-Round Preparation

Preparation for our Ontario resident moose hunts begins long before opening day.

Each spring, we establish mineral sites throughout our hunting area to provide moose with the essential minerals they need after a long winter. These mineral sites support healthy antler growth, cow condition, and calf development while also allowing us to monitor moose activity throughout the year.

We also maintain sulphur baths, which moose frequently visit during the warmer months, giving us another valuable tool for scouting and understanding how moose are using the area.

By the time the October season arrives, we've already spent countless hours in the bush monitoring animal movement and identifying productive hunting locations.

Hunting Areas

Our hunts take place throughout Wildlife Management Unit 55A in a variety of moose habitat, including:

  • Logging roads

  • Recent clear-cuts and select cuts

  • Marshes and wetlands

  • Beaver ponds

  • Creek crossings

  • Regenerating forests

  • Natural feeding areas

  • Travel corridors between bedding and feeding locations

Every day is different, and we'll hunt the areas that are producing the most fresh sign and offering the best opportunity to encounter a mature bull.

Firearm Hunts

Most shot opportunities occur between 50 and 200 yards, although every situation is different depending on the terrain and vegetation.

We recommend arriving with a rifle that you're comfortable shooting from a variety of field positions, as opportunities may arise quickly. Shooting sticks can also be a valuable aid when making an accurate shot.

Our goal is simple: to give every hunter the best possible opportunity for a safe, ethical, and unforgettable Ontario resident moose hunting experience.
