2016–Present Deer Hunt Report
| |
It has been quite some time since I last wrote a deer hunting summary, so I thought it was time for an update.
Since 2016, we've continued to host deer hunters every year during the Ontario gun season. We have two great groups that return each season, and I expect they'll continue coming until the day I decide to stop guiding.
Our deer hunts have always been about more than just harvesting a deer. They're an opportunity to get away from the city, relax, enjoy great food, share stories around camp, and spend time with good friends. Of course, everyone hopes to harvest a deer, but as any experienced hunter knows, deer hunting is heavily influenced by the weather.
Some years everything comes together, and we harvest several deer. Other years, Mother Nature has different plans. Most of the deer harvested over the years have been does or younger bucks, although we know there are mature bucks in the area. I run trail cameras throughout the season, so our hunters can see what's moving through before deciding where they want to hunt.
When the weather turns cold, wet, or windy, many of the guys choose to stay in camp, watch a movie, drink coffee, play cards, and enjoy each other's company. Others head out regardless of the conditions. I personally love being in the woods and have been fortunate to enjoy a lot of success over the years, so I'm always encouraging everyone to get out and give it a try. At the end of the day, though, it's their vacation, and how they spend it is entirely up to them.
For me, the most rewarding part of these deer camps isn't measured by antlers or harvest numbers. It's seeing the friendships that have been built over the years and watching the same familiar faces return season after season. As long as our hunters leave relaxed, happy, and already looking forward to next year, I consider the hunt a success.
Thank you for taking the time to read this update. I look forward to many more seasons and many more memories around deer camp.
Thanks for your continued support,
Nick
